And while audiences showed up in the thousands across Canada to support these acts - even helping their songs dominate the year-end charts in 2000 - none of the Canadian bands would make it out of the decade intact. There was a lot of dyed hair, some unfortunate soul patches, a bit of choreography, a few coordinated outfits, and pop melodies for days, but mostly what made a boy band a “boy band” was its targeted fanbase: teenage girls. Also active during this time: Wave, Voices in Public, 3Deep, Identically Different and Distinct Nature. Teenage family band the Moffats left country music for pop and made their major label debut in 1998 ( Chapter 1: A New Beginning), Montreal’s Sky released its major label debut in 1999 ( Piece of Paradise), and SoulDecision, B4-4 and McMaster & James arrived with their major label debuts in 2000 ( No One Does It Better, B4-4 and McMaster & James, respectively). BSB and NSYNC were circling each other in America - both bands emerged out of Florida, specifically, in the mid-’90s - and as fans began to swoon and swarm around the world, the Canadian music industry wanted its own piece of the boy band billions.
But the race had been on for a few years.

The Knockturnal: Obviously this series is called ‘Dirty Pop.’ How does it feel to have this pretty clear display of love out in public? Michael Turchin: In all businesses, it’s important to have your finances in check and budget and plan for things like that. The Knockturnal: Has your finance background influenced your art? Are you a shark? It was just a hobby from six years ago that I just started to do and now it’s my full-time job.
Michael Turchin No, I went to school for finance. The Knockturnal: So was the intention to become an artist before that? And then someone wanted to buy that painting and I was like, ‘OK, great! Of course, I’ll sell it to you.’ That was like six years ago and it kind of snowballed from that one moment. So I did a painting for fun, I needed to lighten up my house. It started because I needed paintings for my house. Michael Turchin: It kind of just started from the beginning. The Knockturnal: Was there a moment where you realized color was the thing?
